Painting has been proven to lower blood pressure, anxiety, help eliminate depression, arthritis, loneliness, fears, and more! The best therapy without all the side effects!

Understanding Acrylic Paint

Before diving into techniques, it is important to understand what acrylic paint is. Acrylic paint is made of non-organic pigment suspended in a polymer emulsion. This means it is water-soluble when wet but must be sealed to insure it becomes water-resistant when dry.

Benefits of Acrylic Paint

  • Fast Drying Time: Acrylics dry quickly, allowing you to layer colors without waiting long periods.

  • Versatility: You can use acrylics on various surfaces, including canvas, wood, and paper.

  • Easy Cleanup: Since acrylics are water-based, you can clean your brushes and tools with soap and water.

Choosing the Right Acrylic Paint

When selecting acrylic paint, consider the following: (This will be discussed in the classes.)

  • Quality: Artist-grade paints have higher pigment concentrations and better color quality than student-grade paints.

  • Consistency: Acrylics come in various consistencies, from heavy body to fluid. Choose based on your painting style.

  • Color Range: Look for a wide range of colors to expand your palette.

Essential Tools for Acrylic Painting (The tools needed in class will be provided and kits are available to purchase.)

Having the right tools can make a significant difference in your painting experience. Here are some essential tools you will need: (This will all be discussed in your first class.)

  • Brushes: Invest in a variety of brushes, including flat, round, and filbert shapes. Different brushes create different effects.

  • Palette: A palette is essential for mixing colors. You can use a traditional acrylic palette or a disposable palette pad.

  • Canvas: Choose a canvas that suits your style. Stretched canvases are great for beginners, while canvas boards are more affordable.

  • Water Container: Keep a container of water nearby for rinsing brushes.

  • Palette Knife: A palette knife is useful for mixing paint and creating texture.
